Mandela Day

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela
67 Minutes
Every year Goldrush staff dedicate their time and energy to commemorate the Nelson Mandela 67 minutes day.
In keeping with the spirit of Ubuntu (humanity and goodwill) we have invested our time and resources in the following Mandela day initiatives.

The Tumelo Home and Hospice was improved in the following ways:

• A fresh new lawn was planted to create a fresh green welcoming environment for the Hospice.

• The elderly at the hospice were fed nutritious meals and an outside entertainment area with brand new outdoor furniture was set up.

The elderly in Tumelo Home now have a space where they can get fresh air, stretch their legs and admire the surroundings.

Getting a deserved make over

The owners of the care centres that support vulnerable communities depend solely on private donations for their upkeep. The money is used for daily necessities such as food, electricity and cleaning materials.

On Mandela Day, Goldrush staff took it upon themselves to re-vamp the Siyakholwa Support Centre and Tumelo Home and Hospice.

Siyakholwa Support Care centre feeds 55 children and 44 grandmothers. The kitchen was re-tiled, doors were repaired, ceilings were replaced, new light fittings were installed, and a new jungle gym was erected amongst many improvements done at the centre.

Providing a haven for studying

The situation in townships is not always ideal for students who are trying to study for tests and examinations. Issues of space and noise make studying a huge challenge for most learners.

This is why Goldrush built a library from scratch to ensure that the children have a place to use for studying and referencing purposes. The library was fully furnished with tables, chairs and a television set. Books and study materials were also donated and the children will have a better space to focus on their studies.

2018 Mandela Day Projects

“There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return” – Nelson Mandela.

Gauteng
Goldrush renovated two wards (the maternity and female medical ward) at the South Rand Hospital – Rossettenville, South of Johannesburg. The objective of the renovation was to ensure that the hospital offers a hygienic, safe haven where female patients can be attended to in dignity.
